Music (twice a week)
Music is a universal language of creative expression. The SCIS music program aims to nurture all students' natural love of music through vocal, instrumental, and creative movement activities.
- Develop a sense of beat and rhythm
- Acquire a repertoire of rhymes, songs, musical games, and dances
- Build confidence and self-esteem
Physical Education (twice a week)
The physical education program is focused around motivating students to achieve physical confidence and competence through a wide variety of developmentally appropriate activities. Students continue the process of learning movement concepts such as body and space awareness and effort qualities. Students also begin to learn a wide variety of locomotion and manipulative skills such as: Skipping, galloping, jumping, throwing, kicking hopping, running, catching, climbing and overall balance.
Languages
- Mandarin Language and Culture (beginning, intermediate, advanced) three times a week. Students receive instruction in conversational Mandarin and Chinese culture.
- ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes are also available for students with limited English proficiency.
Art
Art is integrated into all subject areas by the classroom teacher with the following goals for viewing art and creating art:
- To understand and use a variety of styles, media, and techniques
- To encourage students to express themselves
- To develop skills for quality production
Library (once a week)
Students learn about the responsibility of caring for and checking out library books. They begin to associate authors and illustrators with titles and characters.
Computer (twice a week)
Pre-Kindergarten students will become comfortable sitting at the computer, handling the mouse, and identifying features on the computer screen. They will develop the motor skills associated with moving the mouse while learning about its proper use. They will become familiar with the computer while experiencing enjoyable and educational activities.
