Music (twice a week)
Music is a universal language of creative expression. The SCIS music program aims to nurture all students' natural love of music through vocal, instrumental, and creative movement activities.
- Explore beat and rhythm
- Invent signs and symbols to represent musical concepts
- Create movements to given words
- Play percussion instruments
- Explore different styles of music through singing and movement
Physical Education (twice a week)
The physical education program is focused around motivating students to achieve physical confidence and competence through a wide variety of developmentally appropriate activities. Students continue the process of learning movement concepts such as body and space awareness and effort qualities. They also focus on a broad scope of specific skills related to locomotion, fitness, rhythm and dance, gymnastics, and elementary games.
Languages
Mandarin Language and Culture (beginning, intermediate, advanced) three times a week. Students receive instruction in conversational Mandarin and Chinese culture.
ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes are also available for students with limited English proficiency.
Art
Art is integrated into all subject areas by the classroom teacher with the following goals for viewing art and creating art:
- To understand and use a variety of styles, mediums, and techniques
- To encourage students to express themselves
- To develop skills for quality production
Library (once a week)
Students learn to differentiate between fiction and non-fiction books. They are exposed to a wide variety of books and literary genres.
Computer (twice a week)
The SCIS technology program is designed to help enhance classroom activities by introducing the use of computers and other multimedia equipment. Skills include the following: Mouse manipulation, keyboard familiarity, beginning word processing skills, and use of software related to classroom concepts.
